The proposed expansion is aimed at addressing the shortage of medical and dental professionals in government hospitals and strengthening the healthcare workforce in Delhi. The roadmap includes new medical colleges as well as an increase in the intake capacity of existing institutions.
The proposal is being sent to the National Medical Commission (NMC) and other concerned authorities for approval.
Under the proposed greenfield expansion, 150 MBBS seats each are planned at the medical colleges attached to the Indira Gandhi Hospital in Dwarka and Guru Gobind Singh Hospital. Separately, the government has proposed increasing the MBBS intake at Dr B S Ambedkar Medical College and Hospital from 125 to 200 seats.
In dental education, the proposed intake at the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) is set to increase from 50 to 70 BDS seats.
The Delhi government has proposed a total of 103 additional postgraduate and DNB seats across various medical institutions.
At the Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), postgraduate capacity is proposed to increase from 260 to 295 seats, adding 35 seats. MAIDS' postgraduate intake is proposed to rise from 22 to 42 seats.
The proposal also includes 24 MD/MS seats at BSA Medical College and additional postgraduate and DNB seats across several government hospitals and medical institutions.
Of the proposed 103 additional postgraduate and DNB seats, 67 are MD/MS seats and 36 are DNB seats.
The expansion plan also includes five fellowship seats for advanced medical training. Three fellowship seats are proposed at GTB Hospital, while two are proposed at the Delhi State Cancer Institute.
With these five fellowship seats, the proposed expansion would add 108 seats across postgraduate, DNB and fellowship-level advanced medical training.
The Delhi government also plans to expand super-speciality programmes such as DM and MCh, along with structured post-doctoral fellowship programmes.
Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Singh said that expanding medical education capacity would help create a larger pool of trained doctors and specialists for the city's healthcare system.
According to the government, the objective is not limited to increasing the number of medical seats but also to build a sustainable workforce of doctors, specialists and super-specialists who can contribute to healthcare delivery in Delhi.
The proposed expansion is subject to approval from the National Medical Commission and other relevant authorities. Therefore, the proposed seat increases should not be treated as final admission capacity until the necessary approvals are received.
If approved, the proposed expansion could increase opportunities for students seeking MBBS, MD/MS, DNB, BDS and advanced medical training programmes in government institutions across Delhi.
The addition of new undergraduate seats as well as postgraduate and DNB positions could also support the expansion of medical education infrastructure and specialist training capacity in the capital.
Further details regarding the final number of seats, courses, eligibility and admission process will depend on approvals from the competent authorities and subsequent official notifications.
