New Delhi: The Delhi government has directed all government, aided, and private schools to implement a year-long air pollution awareness programme during the 2026–27 academic session. The initiative aims to educate students about the causes, effects, and prevention of air pollution while encouraging environmentally responsible behaviour both inside and outside school campuses.
According to a circular issued by the Directorate of Education, schools will organize a series of awareness activities throughout the academic year, including poster-making competitions, debates, essay writing, slogan-writing contests, quizzes, street plays, and other student-led campaigns focused on environmental protection.
As part of the programme, Schools have been asked to conduct monthly activities highlighting key environmental issues such as air pollution, plastic waste management, water conservation, dust control, and noise pollution. The initiative is designed to help students understand environmental challenges and encourage them to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives.
In addition to awareness campaigns, schools have been instructed to adopt practical environmental measures on campus. These include promoting waste segregation through separate wet and dry waste bins, incorporating environmental themes into morning assemblies, and encouraging anti-littering behaviour among students. Schools have also been asked to maintain records of all awareness activities conducted during the academic session.
The Delhi government's initiative seeks to make students active participants in improving air quality by promoting environmental awareness from an early age. Officials believe that involving students in interactive activities will help build long-term awareness about pollution and encourage responsible environmental practices across communities.
