New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has announced the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2027 schedule, introducing significant changes for aspirants. The institute has added a new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper, revised the syllabus after five years, and implemented DigiLocker-based registration with facial authentication to enhance the examination process.
According to the official schedule, the computer-based GATE 2027 examination will be conducted on February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, and 21, 2027, in two sessions each day. The online registration process is expected to begin in the second week of August 2026, while the detailed notification and application schedule will be made available on the official GATE portal.
GATE is a national-level entrance examination conducted for admission to postgraduate programmes in engineering, technology, architecture, science, and humanities, and is also used by several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) for recruitment.
One of the biggest highlights of GATE 2027 is the introduction of the Robotics and Automation (RA) paper. The new subject reflects the growing demand for professionals in robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, and smart manufacturing. With this addition, aspirants interested in emerging technologies will have another specialized paper to choose from.
In another structural change, the Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) paper has been converted into a sectional paper under Engineering Sciences (XE).
IIT Madras has also revised the GATE syllabus for various test papers after five years. The updated syllabus has been designed to reflect the latest technological advancements and changing industry expectations, ensuring that the examination remains relevant for higher education admissions and recruitment in technical sectors. To strengthen the examination process, IIT Madras has announced DigiLocker-based registration with facial authentication for GATE 2027 applicants.
