The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) has released a list of
1,804 candidates linked to the infamous 2016 teacher recruitment
irregularities, complying with a Supreme Court directive to make the names
public within a week.
The disclosure, made on August 30 at 8 pm
through the Commission’s official website, comes amid one of the state’s most
contentious hiring controversies. Those listed have been disqualified from
appearing in the upcoming selection tests scheduled for September 7 and 14.
In April this year, the Supreme Court scrapped
25,753 appointments made through the WBSSC, declaring the entire recruitment
process “vitiated and tainted.” Of these, 5,303 were identified as
beneficiaries of the irregularities, including the 1,804 candidates now officially
named.
The apex court bench of Justices Sanjay Kumar
and Satish Chandra Sharma had directed the Commission on August 28 to publish
the tainted list within seven days, while stressing that the fresh recruitment
exercise would remain under close judicial watch.
The list reveals only the names and roll
numbers of the barred candidates, omitting their school or subject
affiliations. WBSSC officials said the measure ensures public accountability
while keeping the notification concise.
The Commission has assured the court that “not a single tainted candidate” will be allowed in the new recruitment cycle. The publication of names is being seen as a significant step towards restoring transparency and integrity in West Bengal’s school teacher selection process.
