A major shift is underway in Indian students’ global education choices, with Germany overtaking the United States and Canada as the preferred destination for higher studies.
According to the UpGrad Transnational Education
(TNE)
Report 2024–25, Germany’s share of Indian applicants has surged
from 13.2% in 2022 to 32.6% in 2024–25, while applications to the US fell 13%
year-on-year, and Canada’s share dropped sharply from 17.85% to 9.3%.
The report highlights Europe’s growing appeal,
with Ireland (3.9%), France (3.3%), and other European countries collectively
attracting 9% of applicants. Meanwhile, the UAE has emerged as another rising
destination, now hosting 42% of its international student population from
India.
Career prospects, rather than permanent
residency, are driving these choices. Only 19.9% of surveyed students
prioritized PR, whereas 45.7% focused on tangible career outcomes. Funding
remains critical, with 33% relying on education loans and 28% on scholarships.
Master’s programmes dominate, chosen by 86.5% of respondents.
Praneet Singh, associate vice president – University Partnerships, upGrad Study Abroad, commented on the findings:
"Indian
students today are far more intentional about their education choices – driven
by geopolitical awareness, cost consciousness, and the realities of stricter
visa regimes and uncertain post-study pathways. The traditional ‘Big Four’
destinations are no longer the default; instead, Europe, the Middle East, and
APAC are emerging as smarter, future-ready alternatives. Our study abroad
report sets a clear call for universities, platforms, and policymakers to meet
the next generation of Indian students at the intersection of ambition and
affordability."
The report signals a new era in international education, where strategic choices, affordability, and career outcomes are redefining the map of global student mobility.
