The Maharashtra State Education Department has urged the Union government to
expand the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) to capture
enrolment data for students entering directly into Classes 2 to 12.
Currently, UDISE records enrolments only from
Class 1, leaving gaps in tracking children who join the system later. Several
districts have raised concerns, citing out-of-school children being
mainstreamed, students with disabilities, new admissions into higher grades of
recognized schools, and older learners enrolling in night schools.
Sanjay Yadav, state project director of Samagra Shiksha, has formally written to the Centre, stressing that the update is critical for accurate and inclusive data reporting.
The department has
highlighted the urgency of the move, warning that incomplete enrolment figures
could distort teacher deployment plans for the 2025–26 academic year, which
must be finalized by September 30, 2025.
Supporting documents from multiple districts have been submitted to the deputy director general of the Union Statistics Department. Officials argue that the change would enable more effective planning and resource allocation, especially for students entering through non-traditional or advanced pathways.
