The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is ramping up efforts to attract
more students to its schools while strengthening support for children with
disabilities. Currently serving around 6.5 lakh students, MCD aims to raise
enrolment by at least one lakh, officials said.
As part of the initiative, two teachers from
each school will hit the streets every Saturday to engage local communities,
highlighting the benefits of MCD schools, including free meals, uniforms, and
stationery. To reward staff participation, the corporation is set to introduce
the ‘Nigam Award’ for teachers who successfully drive enrolment growth.
In tandem, children with disabilities in
government schools will gain access to a broader range of therapeutic and
counselling services. The Education Department’s resource centres now offer
physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and psychological support
from trained clinical psychologists.
Delhi currently has 24 resource centres,
including 10 recently inaugurated by Home Minister Amit Shah under the ‘Sewa
Pakhwada’ initiative. Together, they are expected to serve over 12,500
children, providing family counselling, sensory and virtual reality rooms,
formal assessments, and structured therapy sessions.
Schools have been instructed to strictly
follow new guidelines to ensure seamless coordination among Special Education
Teachers, Resource Centre Coordinators, and therapists. Centres will operate
six days a week, including during vacations, with each child receiving up to
eight 45-minute therapy sessions per day.
This dual approach — targeted community outreach to boost enrolment, coupled with enhanced support for children with disabilities—underscores MCD’s commitment to inclusive, high-quality education across Delhi.
