The Kerala government has announced a comprehensive relief package for the
family of 13-year-old Mithun, a Class VIII student who was electrocuted last
month at Thevalakkara Boys High School. The tragedy, which unfolded on July 17,
shocked the state and raised serious questions about campus safety.
On August 14, Minister for General Education V Sivankutty
laid the foundation stone for a new home at the site of the family’s current
residence. The 1,000-square-foot house — being constructed in collaboration
with the Public Education Department and Kerala Scouts and Guides — will
feature three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, kitchen, dining area,
sit-out, and staircase. It is expected to be completed within four months at a
cost of ₹20 lakh.
The government has also committed to funding
the education of Mithun’s younger brother, ensuring he receives full academic
support in the years ahead.
In addition to the new home, multiple
financial aid packages have been announced: ₹10 lakh from the state government,
₹3 lakh from the Public Education Department, ₹10 lakh from the Kerala State
Electricity Board (KSEB), and ₹11 lakh from the Kerala State Teachers
Association (KSTA).
Mithun lost his life after coming into contact
with a low-hanging live electric cable while trying to retrieve a slipper that
had landed atop a parking shed on the school premises. He had been playing with
friends when the accident occurred.
“This is not just about compensation — it is
about standing by a family in their darkest hour and ensuring no child should
face such danger in a place meant for learning,” Sivankutty said.
The government has indicated that investigations into the safety lapse are ongoing, with accountability measures expected in the coming weeks.
