As Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan marks his 83rd birthday on October 11, 2025, the spotlight falls on a life forged by education, perseverance, and relentless ambition.
Born in Prayagraj (then Allahabad) on October 11, 1942, Bachchan’s early years set the foundation for his extraordinary journey.
He began his schooling at St. Mary’s Convent School in Allahabad before moving to Sherwood College in Nainital, where he discovered his love for acting.
Inspired by his mother, Teji Bachchan, who had once dreamed of joining Hindi cinema, Amitabh shone on stage, winning the Best Actor award in his first year at the school’s annual play.
After completing his intermediate education, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Kirori Mal College, Delhi University, standing out as one of the most educated actors of his time. Following graduation, he moved to Kolkata and worked as a business executive at Bird & Company, earning ₹400 a month while sharing a cramped room with seven to eight others.
Driven by his passion for acting, he left his stable job despite his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s wishes.
Rejected by All India Radio for a news announcer role due to his voice — a trait that would later become iconic — he persevered.
In 1969, he lent his voice to the film Bhoowan Shome and debuted on screen in Saat Hindustani, earning ₹5,000, the modest start of a legendary career.
From the classrooms of Nainital to the studios of Mumbai, Amitabh Bachchan’s life story is a testament to resilience, vision, and the enduring power of dreams.
