The National Medical Commission (NMC) has given a significant push to
medical education in India by adding 9,075 new MBBS seats for the 2025–26
academic year, excluding AIIMS and JIPMER institutions. With these additions,
India now offers a total of 1,26,600 MBBS seats, combining renewed and newly
approved seats nationwide.
The NEET UG 2025 seat matrix has undergone
multiple revisions this year amid fluctuating approvals across medical
colleges. Candidates are urged to carefully review the updated matrix and
adhere to the revised schedule issued by the NMC to secure their seats.
In Andhra Pradesh, Santhiram Medical College in Nandyal has expanded its intake from 150 to 250 MBBS seats, while Anna Gowri Medical College and Hospital has received sanction for 150 new seats.
States including Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Karnataka have also increased
medical seats, creating more opportunities for aspiring doctors. Conversely,
Delhi’s Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research saw a reduction of
150 seats.
The seat matrix has been dynamic: in
September, the NMC added 6,850 seats but removed 1,056 citing pending court
cases, approval delays, and renewals. A subsequent revision approved 7,375 new
seats while cutting 456, following the Cabinet’s clearance of 10,000 MBBS seats
under Phase 3 of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) expansion.
Meanwhile, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has extended the NEET UG Round 3 choice-filling deadline to October 13, 2025. Candidates yet to submit their preferences must visit mcc.nic.in. Round 3 seat allotment results are slated for announcement on October 15.
