In a major move to modernize school administration, the Ministry of
Education has urged States and Union Territories to adopt the Unified Payments
Interface (UPI) for fee submissions, marking a significant step in India’s
digital transformation of education.
A circular issued by the Department of School
Education and Literacy emphasized that embracing digital payment systems — including
UPI, mobile wallets, and net banking — will enhance the “Ease of Schooling” by
making financial transactions in schools faster, more transparent, and
accessible from home.
The initiative encourages not just schools, but
also autonomous educational bodies like NCERT, CBSE, KVS, and NVS, to implement
mechanisms for collecting admission and examination fees digitally.
Transitioning from cash-based systems, officials noted, will reduce
administrative bottlenecks while fostering financial literacy among students,
parents, and school staff.
Highlighting the broader vision, the Ministry stated that integrating digital payments into schools aligns with the government’s nationwide Digital Transformation goals. The shift is seen as a crucial step toward realizing a Viksit Bharat by 2047—an inclusive, digitally empowered education system designed to benefit all stakeholders.
