The inaugural batch of the Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (MFSDS & AI) at IIT Guwahati has made a striking debut, recording an exceptional 91% placement rate. Established in 2021 in partnership with the Mehta Family Foundation, the School is among the first in the IIT system to offer a dedicated undergraduate program in Data Science and AI.

The 2021–25 cohort secured coveted positions with global tech giants, including Google, Microsoft, and Warner Bros Discovery. One standout student has also earned a spot at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA, for higher studies, underscoring the program international recognition.

Ahead of the curve in emerging technologies

Professor Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, hailed the achievement as a testament to the School’s forward-thinking approach. “By introducing a BTech in Data Science and AI in 2021, we were ahead of the curve. The success of our first graduating class validates both the soaring demand for these skills and the rigor of our curriculum,” he said.

For Rahul Mehta, founder of the Mehta Family Foundation, the milestone reflects the shared vision that led to the School’s creation. “The achievements of our inaugural batch highlight the dedication of IIT Guwahati’s faculty and the extraordinary talent of its students. Our mission was to empower the next generation of leaders in this transformative field, and these results affirm that vision,” he said.

Cutting-edge projects, global opportunities

The program emphasized applied research and innovation, with students undertaking a year-long project on advanced topics like deepfake detection, conversational AI, multimodal healthcare systems, robotics, large language model automation, and federated learning.

“Our pride lies in the diversity of outcomes,” said Professor Ratnajit Bhattacharjee, Head of the School. “Some graduates are stepping directly into leadership-track industry roles, while others are pursuing advanced research. That flexibility demonstrates the strength of our program+ in shaping adaptable, world-class problem solvers.”

The Mehta Family School currently offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs, including MTech, PhD, and online BSc (Hons) courses, attracting talent from across India and abroad. With its first batch already making waves, the School is solidifying IIT Guwahati’s position as a leading hub for innovation in AI and data-driven technologies.
