The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) has launched an Advanced Certificate Programme in Quantum Computing: Algorithms and AI/ML, a cutting-edge online course designed to empower professionals with the skills needed to navigate the fast-evolving quantum era.

Offered through the Continuing Education Centre (CEC) in collaboration with TimesPro, the 6.5-month programme merges theory with hands-on practice using tools such as Qiskit, PennyLane, and IBM Quantum Systems.

The curriculum spans quantum internet protocols, secure communication, quantum algorithms, and quantum machine learning (QML) — enabling participants to simulate and deploy real-world projects across sectors including finance, healthcare, optimisation, image classification, and drug discovery. Learners will also gain exposure to both IBM’s and D-Wave’s quantum systems, bridging the gap between concept and application.

“We designed this programme to bridge theory and deployment,” said Prof. Kaushik Ghosh, Coordinator, CEC, IIT Roorkee. “Participants will code, simulate, and benchmark quantum algorithms while leveraging AI/ML methods where quantum advantage is emerging. By integrating real hardware access and production-grade tools, we enable professionals to move from prototypes to pilots in data-intensive sectors such as security, optimisation, and healthcare.”

Structured into five modules, the course covers:

  1. Introduction to Quantum Computing and Applications
  2. Quantum Algorithms and Software
  3. Quantum Communications and Networks
  4. Quantum Machine Learning
  5. Quantum Machine Learning Applications

Participants will gain practical mastery over Shor’s, Grover’s, and Simon’s algorithms, explore quantum communication protocols like Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), and implement advanced QML models such as QSVMs, QNNs, and Quantum GANs.

Graduates will be prepared for emerging roles such as Quantum Software Developer, Quantum Machine Learning Engineer, Quantum Algorithm Researcher, Quantum Data Scientist, AI Product Developer, and Security Analyst/Cryptographer.

The initiative comes amid a rapidly growing global quantum computing market, valued at USD 1.42 billion in 2024 and expected to soar to USD 4.24 billion by 2030, growing at a 20.5% CAGR. With this programme, IIT Roorkee aims to place India at the forefront of quantum-driven innovation, nurturing talent ready to power the next wave of AI and technology breakthroughs.
