International students are increasingly flocking to New Zealand, with satisfaction levels hitting new highs, according to the 2025 International Student Experience Survey conducted by Education New Zealand (ENZ).
This year, an impressive 87% of international students rated their overall
experience positively, a slight rise from 86% in 2024, while 43% described it
as “excellent,” up 2% from last year.
Robust
enrolment growth signals strong recovery
The positive sentiment comes amid a steady resurgence in international
student enrolments. Between January and April 2025, 63,610 students were
enrolled in New Zealand education institutions — a 16% increase from the same
period last year and a striking 49% rise compared to 2023. Growth was seen
across all educational sectors, with Private Training Establishments (PTEs)
leading the charge with a 41% jump over 2024 figures.
China and India remain the dominant source
countries, followed by Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, the USA, Nepal, the
Philippines, Thailand, and Germany. Notably, Sri Lanka moved up to fifth place
from ninth, while Nepal climbed to seventh from eleventh, reflecting shifting
patterns in global student mobility.
Students
praise connections, quality, and overall experience
Survey respondents highlighted the warmth of New Zealand communities and the
quality of their educational experience. Ninety-two percent of students valued
the people and connections they made, 90% were satisfied with the quality of
education, and 89% praised the arrival and orientation processes. Overall
living experience and ease of study arrangements were both rated positively by
87% of students.
Visa processes also received better ratings,
with 80% satisfied with the application process, up from 78% in 2024, and 74%
content with processing times, a significant improvement from 64%. Perceptions
of value for money also surged, rising from 65% to 76%, reflecting a growing
appreciation for New Zealand’s holistic student experience.
Insights
from education leaders
“This is encouraging news for New Zealand. The fact that students continue
to rate their experience here as excellent is a credit to our education
providers and the warmth of our communities,” said Amanda Malu, Chief Executive
of Education New Zealand. “We’re seeing a steady and meaningful recovery in
international education. Students aren’t just coming here—they’re thriving and
feeling a sense of belonging.”
Marie Clark, ENZ Director of Insights and
Performance, emphasized the survey’s critical role in shaping policy and
strategy. “As the only national survey focused on international student
experience across all sectors, it provides a powerful tool for tracking trends
and improving outcomes. Data by country, sector, and gender ensures
policymakers and education providers can make informed decisions.”
The 2025 survey reinforces New Zealand’s commitment to sustainable, high-quality growth in international education, highlighting a system that not only delivers academic excellence but also fosters community engagement and economic benefit.
