Nilgiris-based environmental researcher Dr.
Ashokkumar Veeramuthu has once again secured a spot among the World’s Top Scientists, a global ranking
jointly compiled by Stanford University
and Elsevier Publishers. This
marks his third consecutive recognition
— in 2023, 2024, and 2025 — a
distinction few Indian scientists have achieved.
The honour celebrates his sustained
contributions to research that bridges science and society — tackling pressing
global challenges such as waste management, pollution reduction, and
sustainable energy.
Driven by the belief that science should serve
people, Dr. Ashokkumar’s work focuses on developing microalgae-based clean fuels, innovative plastic recycling technologies, and efficient waste management systems
adaptable across economies. His solutions blend academic rigour with practical
application, aiming to make sustainability both achievable and scalable.
His global contributions have also earned him
the ‘Brain Pool: Visiting Global
Scientist Award’ from the National
Research Foundation of Korea, recognising scientists who advance
sustainable, applied research worldwide.
A product of Government schools in Tamil
Nadu’s Nilgiris district, Dr. Ashokkumar’s rise to international recognition
underscores the transformative power of persistence and purpose-driven
research. He has authored over 130
research papers in leading international journals and collaborates
with 18 universities worldwide,
advancing research that unites innovation and impact.
Currently, he serves as Professor and Head of the Centre for Waste
Management and Renewable Energy at Saveetha University (SIMATS), Chennai, and holds visiting professorships at Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), University Technology Malaysia, and
several top Korean universities.
Dr. Ashokkumar’s consistent inclusion in Stanford’s global list not only highlights his individual excellence but also reflects the rising influence of Indian research on the world stage. His journey — from a small town in the Nilgiris to global recognition — stands as a testament to how homegrown innovation and dedication can shape the world’s sustainability agenda.
