News Story

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has built one of the country’s most comprehensive student support frameworks, combining merit-based aid, need-based scholarships, and a growing number of donor-funded endowments to uplift students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.

Each year, the institute disburses scholarships as tuition fee waivers or direct financial assistance to students’ accounts, ensuring that financial limitations do not hinder academic pursuits. These scholarships — both institute- and donor-led — aim to encourage excellence while easing economic burdens.

A layered support system

IIT Delhi’s financial aid network caters to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, extending help through Merit-cum-Means (MCM) scholarships, fee waivers, fellowships, and more than 120 donor-backed awards. Depending on eligibility, students can receive annual assistance ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹1 lakh.

The aid structure factors in family income, academic performance, social background, and field of study — reflecting IIT Delhi’s commitment to inclusion and equal opportunity.

Merit-cum-means scholarships

Available to undergraduate students in BTech, MA, MSc, and MPP programmes, the MCM scholarship benefits those with an annual family income of up to ₹8 lakh. Around 25% of students qualify, receiving ₹4,000 per month along with a full tuition fee waiver.
To maintain eligibility, students must secure a minimum SGPA/CGPA of 6.0 and provide updated income proof annually.

Beyond the cap: institute free studentship

For those who meet the MCM criteria but fall outside the 25% ceiling, IIT Delhi extends additional fee waivers — up to 10% of eligible students — purely based on financial need.

Complete exemption for SC, ST, and PwD students

Students belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Persons with Disabilities are fully exempt from tuition fees, irrespective of family income. Those with annual incomes below ₹8 lakh also enjoy hostel rent waivers, free basic meals, and a ₹1,000 monthly pocket allowance.

Empowering through philanthropy

The institute’s donor-led scholarships — including the ABB Scholarship, Bina Dewan Singh Scholarship, Budhwanti Mrig Memorial Educational Scholarship, Buti Foundation Scholarship, Bhatia Scholarship, CS&E 1998 Batch Scholarship, GS Bhasin Scholarship, Gobind H. Keswani Scholarship, Gyan Scholarship, and IITDAA Scholarship — further expand access to quality education.

Detailed eligibility conditions, renewal policies, and application timelines are available on IIT Delhi’s Financial Assistance Portal.

Through this integrated system of institutional and donor-backed aid, IIT Delhi continues to redefine academic empowerment — ensuring that no deserving student is left behind for want of financial means.
