Congress MP and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, has vowed to “strongly raise” in Parliament the deepening crisis engulfing several top universities across the Northeast.
In a post on X, Gogoi expressed alarm over what he described as the “disturbing decline” in the functioning of once-reputed institutions such as Tezpur University, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), and Gauhati University. “Recently, many top universities in the Northeast have been in the news for the wrong reasons... often it is the action of the Vice Chancellor which has raised concerns,” he said.
The Assam MP, who has been vocal about governance issues in higher education, had earlier written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, flagging what he termed an “administrative and institutional crisis” at Tezpur University.
He noted that the situation has not only demoralized faculty and students but also eroded academic standards and national rankings.
“These universities were once centres of excellence. Today, both students and teachers have expressed serious displeasure over their functioning,” Gogoi said.
“I have written to the Prime Minister’s Office about Tezpur University, but my concern extends to the entire Northeast region. I will raise this issue strongly in Parliament and hope for a constructive response from the government.”
The Congress leader’s statement comes amid growing discontent in the region’s academic circles over allegations of mismanagement, lack of transparency, and shrinking autonomy in central universities.
