India has consolidated its presence on Asia’s higher education map, with five Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and Delhi University making it to the continent’s top 100 institutions in the latest QS World University Asia Rankings, released on November 4.

IIT-Delhi, ranked 59th this year, has been named the best Indian institution for the fifth consecutive year, reaffirming its dominance in technical and research education. The other IITs in the top 100 include IIT-Madras, IIT-Bombay, IIT-Kanpur, and IIT-Kharagpur, alongside IISc Bengaluru and Delhi University.

According to the London-based global higher education analyst QS, seven Indian institutions have found a place in Asia’s top 100, 20 in the top 200, and 66 in the top 500.

The report highlights that 36 Indian universities improved their rankings this year, while 16 maintained their previous positions and 105 saw a decline.

“The expansion of the rankings is associated with the greater volatility observed in this year’s results,” QS noted, adding that India continues to excel in the region for the highest proportion of academic staff holding PhDs.

Overall, 41 Indian institutions now feature in the top 80th percentile of universities in Asia, a testament to the country’s growing academic influence amid increasing global competition.
