A two-day workshop on big data analysis opened at the University of Kashmir (KU) on August 18, equipping young researchers and faculty with cutting-edge skills to navigate the fast-expanding world of complex datasets.

Titled “Primer to Big Data Analysis: Applications in Analysis of Images, Genomes and Relevant Datasets”. The program is being hosted by KU’s Conservation Science and Innovation Laboratory, Centre of Research for Development (CORD), in collaboration with the Atal Incubation Centre (AIC), Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology (CCMB), and IKP, with sponsorship from PopVax.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan, inaugurating the workshop, said big data was transforming the very foundations of scientific inquiry. “Such programs are essential for preparing our young scholars to address contemporary challenges through advanced analytical skills,” she noted.

Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, stressed the transformative role of data-driven research, urging participants to “leverage such opportunities to sharpen their academic and research pursuits.” KU Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal lauded the initiative for fostering innovation and collaboration across disciplines.

Dr. Karthikeyan Vasudevan, Chief Scientist, CSIR-CCMB, and Dr. Ramjee Pallela, COO AIC-CCMB, highlighted the workshop’s focus on practical applications of big data in genomics, biological sciences, and imaging.

Welcoming the participants, Prof. Bashir A. Ganai, Director CORD and convener of the workshop, said the event is designed to provide a foundational platform for early-career researchers. Prof. Waseem Bari, Director South Campus KU and co-convener, extended a formal vote of thanks.

The workshop has drawn wide participation from faculty across higher education institutions and a large number of research scholars, underscoring growing interest in data-driven scientific exploration.
