The Jammu and Kashmir administration on November 25 unveiled a phased winter
vacation schedule for schools across Kashmir and the winter zone of Jammu,
responding to a sharp and early plunge in temperatures that has disrupted
normal academic activity.
According to the government order, the winter
break will begin in stages to balance safety concerns with academic
requirements. Several parts of Kashmir have been battling sub-zero temperatures
for over a week, making daily school operations — particularly for younger
children — extremely difficult.
The vacation period for pre-primary classes will
start from November 26.
For students from Classes 1 to 8,
the last working day will be December 1,
allowing schools to wrap up essential lessons before the deep winter sets in.
Students of Classes 9 to 12 will continue academic activities until December 11. Officials said the extended
schedule ensures senior students have adequate instructional days before the
long winter break, without compromising their safety amid intensifying cold
conditions.
Schools up to Class 8 will reopen on March 1, marking the start of the new academic session.
Higher classes — Grades 9 to 12 — will resume earlier, on February 22, enabling a smoother
transition into the academic calendar.
The administration said the move was prompted by sustained sub-zero temperatures across Kashmir. By issuing the schedule early, officials said they aim to give parents and institutions ample time to prepare for the extended closure that forms a defining part of the region’s annual academic cycle.
