Schools across Jammu and Kashmir will remain closed for two days after Pakistani drone intrusion attempts were reported along the Line of Control (LoC), prompting authorities to prioritise student safety amid heightened regional tensions.
The decision follows an incident in the early hours of Sunday, when the Indian Army intercepted and thwarted an attempt by two to three small quadcopters to violate Indian airspace in the Poonch sector along the LoC.
Security officials said the drones were detected during routine surveillance and were prevented from breaching deeper into Indian territory.
In the wake of the incident, the Directorate of School Education Kashmir ordered the suspension of classes on March 2 and 3, delaying the scheduled reopening of schools up to Class 8 after winter vacations.
βIn the interest of administration and safety of students, it is hereby ordered that all Government and Private Recognised Schools of Kashmir Division shall remain closed on 2nd & 3rd March, 2026,β the official order stated.
The closure affects thousands of students across the Valley who were preparing to return to classrooms after the winter break.
While authorities did not cite any direct threat to educational institutions, officials indicated that the precautionary measure was taken in view of the prevailing security environment along the border.
The attempted drone incursions come at a time of broader geopolitical unease, with tensions running high across the region.
Security agencies remain on heightened alert along the LoC, particularly in sensitive sectors such as Poonch, where cross-border ceasefire violations and infiltration attempts have historically been reported.
For now, classrooms will remain silent, as administrators and security agencies closely monitor developments along one of the most volatile frontiers in South Asia.
