In a significant boost for Indian students eyeing a UK master’s degree, the University of Birmingham has announced a steep increase in its India Postgraduate Chancellor’s Scholarship for the 2026 intake, raising the award to £10,000 per student.
The scholarship, open to Indian nationals enrolling in full-time postgraduate taught programmes at the university’s Edgbaston campus in the UK, will support students joining in September 2026.
Award value sees sharp jump
The increase marks a dramatic rise in funding over the past three years.
2024: 15 scholarships worth £2,000 each
2025: 50 scholarships worth £5,000 each
2026: 15 scholarships worth £10,000 each
While the number of awards has been reduced for 2026, the value per scholarship has doubled compared to last year — underscoring a shift towards deeper financial backing for selected candidates.
The £10,000 award will be applied towards tuition fees for the first year of study in the 2026–27 academic session.
Who can apply?
Hold an offer for a full-time postgraduate taught programme starting September 2026
Select the University of Birmingham as their firm choice.
Meet all academic conditions outlined in the offer letter
Be domiciled in India and classified as an overseas fee payer.
Pay a £3,000 tuition fee deposit by the deadline stated in the offer letter
Demonstrate the ability to cover remaining tuition and living costs in the UK
The university has clarified that the scholarship cannot be deferred to a later intake.
Application process and deadline
Students must first accept their admission offer and pay the required deposit. A separate scholarship application must then be submitted before May 31, 2026.
Selections will be made on the basis of academic merit and the applicant’s Statement of Purpose, making the personal narrative a critical component of the evaluation process.
Successful candidates must enrol in September 2026 and clear their net first-year tuition fees by November 1 following enrolment.
With UK education costs steadily rising, the enhanced £10,000 award positions the University of Birmingham’s India Postgraduate Chancellor’s Scholarship as one of the more substantial institutional grants available exclusively to Indian students for 2026.
