Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan
recently announced that around 19 foreign universities are set to establish
campuses in India in the current academic session, marking a significant stride
in the internationalization of the country’s higher education landscape.
Speaking at the Study
in India Edu-Diplomatic Conclave 2026 in New Delhi, Pradhan said the
entry of leading global institutions reflects India’s rising academic
credibility and its growing appeal as a destination for world-class education.
The move is in line with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020, which
encourages global collaboration, academic mobility, and the presence of reputed
international universities in India. The policy seeks to ensure that Indian
students gain access to globally benchmarked education without leaving the
country, while also drawing international students to Indian campuses.
Officials said expanding partnerships between
Indian institutions and global counterparts in cutting-edge sectors — including
semiconductors, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, critical minerals, agriculture,
and sustainable management — are further accelerating this transformation.
With foreign universities preparing to set up base, the government is betting on a new era of cross-border learning — one that could redefine India’s ambition to emerge as a global knowledge powerhouse.
