Parliament has cleared the Indian Institutes of
Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, paving the way for Assam’s
first Indian Institute of Management in Guwahati and the Northeast’s second
after IIM Shillong.
Hailing the move as a “historic milestone,”
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the institute will bridge regional disparities in higher education, foster world-class
management talent, and energize research and innovation in the region.
“This reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s
vision to ensure that premier institutions reach every corner of India,
particularly the Northeast,” Pradhan said in a post on X.
The establishment of IIM Guwahati is part of a trilateral agreement between the Centre, the Assam government, and the
United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) — a pact aimed
at fostering long-term peace and development in the state.
Pradhan congratulated Assam Chief Minister
Himanta Biswa Sarma and the people of the state, noting that the government had
fulfilled another promise under its “Purvodaya” vision for eastern India. He
added that the new institute would also contribute to the development of the “Ashtalakshmi” states of the Northeast, seen as crucial
to India’s growth story.
IIM Guwahati is expected to open new doors for students from Assam and neighbouring states,
who until now often had to travel far for premier management education. The
institute is also likely to attract faculty, researchers, and
corporate linkages, creating local opportunities and anchoring
the region more firmly on India’s education and industry map.
With the passage of this Bill, Assam makes its debut on the national IIM map — a development that marks both an educational leap and a symbolic stride in India’s efforts to integrate the Northeast into its higher education growth story.
