What should have been a defining moment of pride descended into chaos and protest at Haridev Joshi University’s convocation ceremony in Jaipur, after several students were denied the chance to receive their degrees on stage.

The third convocation ceremony of Haridev Joshi University, attended by 271 students from the past two batches, quickly spiralled into controversy when only gold medallists were reportedly invited to the dais, leaving many others sidelined despite being present in full convocation attire alongside their families.

The simmering resentment found a voice when student Sara Ismail took the stage and delivered a sharp, unscripted remark: “Thank you for inviting and insulting us.”

The statement, made in the presence of senior officials and dignitaries, struck a chord instantly. A video of the moment has since gone viral, capturing the frustration that had been building inside the venue.

Speaking later, Sara underscored that the issue went beyond logistical lapses. For students who invest years in earning their degrees, being excluded on the very day meant to honour their efforts felt deeply humiliating, she said.

Many students echoed the sentiment, alleging they had attended the ceremony with parents and relatives expecting a formal recognition, only to discover that they would not be called to the stage. The perceived exclusion soon triggered anger within the gathering.

As disappointment turned into protest, slogans were raised and objections mounted against the arrangements, with students demanding equal opportunity to receive their degrees on stage.

The situation escalated further after the ceremony, when protests reportedly intensified near the convoy of Premchand Bairwa, who was present at the event. Police personnel were eventually deployed to manage the unrest.

Amid mounting pressure, senior university officials, including the Vice-Chancellor, returned to address the situation. Degrees were subsequently distributed to the remaining students, bringing a belated resolution to the standoff.

For many families, the convocation was meant to mark a moment of achievement and celebration. Instead, for a large section of students, it became a stark reminder of how poor planning can overshadow years of hard-earned success in a matter of minutes.
