In a significant push to internationalize higher education, Indian Institute of Technology Madras has
partnered with University of Canterbury to
create a direct academic pathway for students to pursue postgraduate studies
abroad.
Under the collaboration, students enrolled in
IIT Madras’ BS programmes will gain access to a structured route leading to
advanced degrees, including the Master of Applied Data Science and MTech
programmes at the New Zealand-based institution.
According to the official statement, the
initiative allows eligible students to complete their undergraduate studies at
IIT Madras and, upon meeting academic criteria, seamlessly transition into
postgraduate programmes at the University of Canterbury. The model establishes
a continuous academic track, bridging undergraduate and master’s education
across institutions.
A key highlight of the agreement is the
defined pathway into the Master of Applied Data Science programme, designed to
equip students with global exposure while ensuring academic continuity.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed
on March 30, 2026, lays out a comprehensive framework for collaboration across
teaching, research and academic exchange.
The partnership includes provisions for
student and faculty mobility, joint research initiatives, and co-teaching opportunities.
It also enables deeper academic engagement through conferences, seminars and
collaborative discussions, aimed at strengthening cross-institutional research
linkages.
As part of the tie-up, both institutions will
also explore expanding digital and hybrid learning formats. Courses may be
delivered through platforms such as SWAYAM,
NPTEL and NPTEL+, widening access to
academic resources.
At IIT Madras, the Centre for Outreach and
Digital Education (CODE) will act as the nodal body to coordinate programmes
under the partnership, including digital initiatives and outreach efforts.
The institute said the collaboration aligns with its broader strategy to build scalable global education pathways, combining on-campus learning with flexible online models to expand international access for Indian students.
