News Story

In a move aimed at honoring the memory of Nitin Chauhan, a former MBA student who died by suicide, Shoolini University in Solan recently announced a full scholarship covering its MBA programme for one economically disadvantaged student each year over the next ten years.

Nitin’s death on March 29, allegedly linked to harassment and denial of a promised salary following a campus placement, sparked widespread student outrage. In response, the university said the scholarship is intended to celebrate Nitin’s aspirations and ensure his journey inspires future students.

The university’s official statement mourned Nitin’s passing and expressed solidarity with his family: “The entire community stands with his parents, family, and loved ones. We pray for strength and peace for them.” It further emphasized the institution’s commitment to student welfare, encouraging students to prioritize mental health and engage with available support systems.

The announcement followed a large-scale protest on March 31, when students blocked roads demanding justice, a formal apology to Nitin’s family, and the removal of Avnee Khosla, Trustee and Vice President of the university.

According to students, Nitin had been placed in a Dehradun-based company with a promised salary of ₹50,000 but was reportedly paid only ₹25,000 while working grueling hours from morning until midnight. They alleged that attempts to seek help from the placement cell were ignored and that he faced intimidation, stress they say contributed to his tragic decision.
