News Story

Schools and colleges across several states will remain closed on April 14 to mark Ambedkar Jayanti, commemorating the birth anniversary of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar.

The day, recognised as a public holiday in multiple academic calendars, will see both government and private institutions suspend classes in states including Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.

Institutions in Delhi are also expected to remain shut, in line with official notifications. The occasion is typically observed with tributes, cultural programmes, and awareness initiatives centred on social justice and equality.

This year marks the 135th birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar, widely regarded as the chief architect of the Indian Constitution. Schools and colleges usually organise special assemblies, floral tributes at statues, and discussions highlighting his contributions to law, education, and social reform. Essay competitions and lectures are also held to underline his enduring legacy.

The mid-April academic calendar further reflects a cluster of regional observances. Festivals such as Tamil New Year and Vishu fall on April 14, followed by Pohela Boishakh and Bohag Bihu around April 15. These celebrations often result in additional school closures across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, and Assam.

Later in April, region-specific holidays such as Basava Jayanti and Garia Puja are observed, contributing to a staggered holiday schedule. Toward the end of the month, festivals like Akshaya Tritiya and Parashurama Jayanti may also lead to closures depending on state government calendars.

Looking ahead, schools are expected to remain closed on International Workers' Day in early May, while Buddha Purnima in the first week of the month could add to the list of holidays in some regions. As schedules vary across boards and states, institutions typically issue detailed calendars in advance, with parents advised to confirm dates directly with their schools.
