In a decisive step to address the growing mental health needs of young learners, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has directed all affiliated schools to integrate the Tele-MANAS helpline — a 24x7 free, confidential mental health service launched by the Union Health Ministry.
Since its rollout in October 2022, Tele-MANAS (National Tele-Mental Health Programme) has handled more than 23 lakh calls across 53 centres in States and Union Territories, offering professional support in 20 languages.
Operated round-the-clock by trained counsellors and mental health professionals, the initiative ensures students have timely, stigma-free access to care.
Expanding access and tools
To deepen outreach, the Health Ministry has also launched a video consultation platform for real-time confidential sessions and rolled out the Tele-MANAS mobile app, currently available in Hindi and English, with regional versions underway.
These measures are designed to address the specific emotional and psychological challenges faced by adolescents.
Directions to schools
In its circular, CBSE has instructed schools to prominently display Tele-MANAS helpline numbers 14416 and 1800-891-4416, along with QR codes for the mobile app, in accessible spaces such as libraries, notice boards, ICT labs, and counsellor rooms.
Schools must also spread awareness through assemblies, newsletters, handbooks, and parent-teacher meetings.
Awareness videos developed by the Health Ministry are to be screened during life-skills and wellness activities, while counsellors and wellness coordinators will be trained to guide students toward the helpline. Age-appropriate, peer-led awareness initiatives have also been recommended.
Wider implementation
The circular has been shared with Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, Sainik Schools, Eklavya Model Residential Schools, and state education departments to ensure broad adoption.
Highlighting the crucial role of schools, CBSE Secretary Himanshu Gupta noted that active participation of institutions is essential to help nurture a resilient, emotionally secure generation.
